Relationship Red Flags for Teens

Red Flags: Recognising The Signs Of Abuse In Teenagers

A one-hour, school-based workshop addressing misogyny, coercive control and unhealthy relationship patterns

Young people are forming relationships earlier than ever before, yet many do so without a clear understanding of what a healthy relationship actually looks like. When there is no physical violence and no visible bruises, harmful dynamics such as control, manipulation, emotional pressure and coercive behaviour are often minimised, normalised or missed entirely.

This creates a serious safeguarding gap. Many teenagers struggle to recognise the difference between everyday conflict, unhealthy or toxic dynamics and emotionally abusive or controlling behaviour. In the context of rising misogyny, online influence and distorted relationship messaging, this lack of awareness places young people at increased emotional and psychological risk.

Relationship Red Flags for Teens is a one-hour, trauma-informed workshop designed specifically for delivery in schools. It provides clear, age-appropriate education that helps teenagers understand relationships through the lens of respect, consent, safety and equality.

The Physiology of Domestic Abuse

The Physiology of Domestic Abuse

CPD/CE Accredited Workshop

Duration: 90 minutes or 3 hours

A Nervous-System-Led Framework for Understanding Survivor Responses and Improving Front-Line Practice

Domestic abuse is not primarily a psychological choice. It is a physiological survival experience. When a person is exposed to ongoing threat, control and coercion, their nervous system adapts to keep them safe. These adaptations shape behaviour, memory, communication and decision-making, often in ways that are misunderstood by systems designed around logic, compliance and linear thinking.

This workshop offers a bottom-up, trauma-informed approach to domestic abuse, helping professionals understand how survivors respond at a nervous-system level and why many common responses are misinterpreted as resistance, inconsistency or lack of cooperation.

What exactly is trauma?

TRAUMA

noun

/ˈtrɔ·mə,ˈtraʊ.mə/

Trauma is an emotional response to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing or disturbing to an individual. This can range from one-time incidents, such as accidents, natural disasters, or violent attacks, to ongoing stressors, such as chronic illness, emotional abuse, or living in a conflict zone.

Trauma is not defined solely by the event itself but by the individual's experience of it. Two people can undergo the same event, yet their psychological and emotional responses may differ significantly. Trauma can disrupt the individual's sense of safety, leading to feelings of helplessness and a diminished sense of self and can affect one's ability to cope with and enjoy day-to-day life.

The impact of trauma can be immediate or delayed, with symptoms surfacing long after the traumatic event has passed, where the effects of trauma become deeply integrated into an individual's identity and way of interacting with the world.

Trauma can deeply affect our bodies, minds, and emotions, often in ways we might not fully understand, and can have profound long-term implications for individuals, including:

  • Mental Health Challenges

  • Chronic Illness

  • Physical Health Issues

  • Emotional Regulation Difficulties

  • Relationship Challenges

  • Substance Use & Abuse

  • Impaired Sense of Self

Trauma can stem from a wide range of experiences, including:

Physical Trauma

Physical trauma results from bodily harm or injury, such as accidents, assaults, or medical procedures. The physical pain and recovery process can also lead to emotional distress.

Emotional Trauma

Emotional trauma arises from experiences that leave a person feeling overwhelmed, helpless or threatened. This can include abuse, neglect, loss, or witnessing violence.

THE

INVISIBLE

TRAUMA BACKPACK

FEELS HEAVY

We all carry an invisible "backpack" filled with our past experiences, including traumas. This backpack can feel heavy and affect how we navigate life's challenges. By understanding the impact of trauma, we can learn to unpack it and develop resilience.

The Statistics

There's been a 25% global increase in depression and anxiety since 2020

These statistics are a wake-up call for urgent action.

These statistics are a

wake-up call for urgent action.

If you're reading in disbelief and shock, you're not alone!

These facts SHOULD leave us outraged:

Outraged that one in seven 10-19-year-olds experience a mental disorder.

Outraged that public sector organisations such as the police and health care practitioners do not receive compulsory training on trauma informed awareness and practice.

Outraged that 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety alone.

These alarming statistics reveal a disturbing truth:

A mental health crisis is unfolding before our eyes.

An avoidable crisis, no less. But our outrage is only useful if it spurs us into ACTION.

So, the question is, what are we going to DO about it?

It's time for a new approach.

One that addresses the heart of the issue and fosters a world where mental wellbeing is prioritised.

Integrating trauma informed practices with positive psychology can help create safer, healthier spaces globally.

Early support, education and intervention are crucial.

Meet Jane Gregory

There is a reason people struggle at work, in leadership, in relationships and in life.

And it is rarely because they are not capable.

It is because of what they carry.

I’m Jane Gregory, former CEO of The Survivor Project, a trainer, writer and facilitator specialising in trauma, human behaviour and the nervous system. This work is grounded in a lifetime of lived experience, and over 14 years on the frontline of crisis, walking alongside people in some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

I have supported more than 10,000 people through abuse, grief, loss and survival. Not just in theory, but in real time. Life coaching, guiding, advising, counselling, listening, holding, supporting, understanding, fighting for, carrying and advocating when they could not do it for themselves.

What I have learned is this.

People do not simply “fail to cope”. They adapt.

They survive.

They carry what was never resolved into every space they enter.

That includes your workplace.

When leaders are overwhelmed, when teams are disconnected, when communication breaks down, we often look at performance. But underneath that sits stress, trauma, fear, learned patterns and nervous systems that are in survival rather than safety.

This is where my work begins.

I deliver workshops, training and leadership development that help people understand not just what they do, but why they do it. I support organisations to recognise the human reality behind behaviour, and to respond in a way that creates real, lasting change.

Because when people feel safer in themselves, they work differently.

They lead differently.

They relate differently.

And the results follow.

Reduced absence.

Stronger leadership.

Clearer communication.

More accountability.

More consistent performance.

A business that feels steady, not strained.

I also work within schools and education, because these patterns do not begin in adulthood. They begin early. When young people learn to understand their emotions, recognise unhealthy dynamics and build a sense of self-worth, we interrupt cycles before they become lifelong struggles.

This is how we change a generation.

And for the individual, the work becomes deeply personal.

Many of the people I support have experienced narcissistic relationships, abuse, abandonment, divorce, grief, and the kind of life experiences that leave you functioning on the outside but struggling underneath. Often, they have been told to move on, to be stronger, to bounce back.

But you cannot simply “bounce back” from something your body and mind have adapted to survive.

You have to understand it.

Gently. Honestly. Without judgement.

I work with people to recognise those patterns, to understand their nervous system, and to begin making choices from awareness rather than survival.

This is not about quick fixes.

It is about real, lasting change.

I bring both compassion and clarity into the work. I will stand alongside you, but I will also challenge what keeps you stuck. I will hold the space, and when needed, I will hold the line. I will fight your corner.

Because growth requires both.

If you are ready to understand what sits beneath behaviour, to lead with awareness rather than pressure, to support your people properly and to create change that lasts, then this is where we begin.
